#Anjana Gupta, Director @ SpACE

“Dancing is just discovery, discovery, discovery”Martha Graham.

A philosophy that has carried forward for over two decades with Anjana Gupta - Founder and Director at the SpACE Academy, Bangalore - and one that has become a way of life for her ever since.

She began her journey with Kathak, interestingly enough, when she enrolled her daughter for classes at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan under the guidance of Gurus Smt. Chitra Venugopal. What started off as a casual interest, soon took to a strongly nurtured passion that has since evolved through her tireless practice and academic pursuits of a degree in Choreography, and a Masters in kathak.

Blessed with the initial tutelage of Smt Chitra Venugopal, Anjana Gupta has been a regular performer in the Bhavanotsav festivals as well as choreographed her own dance ballets under the guidance of Late Guru Dr. Maya Rao. Her choreographic works include Ganga Avartan, Aajeejaan, Haasya Chudamani and The Calling of Mother Earth. An avid researcher and visionary, she saw drive in the words of Curt Sachs when he said – “Dance is the mother of all arts. Music and poetry exist in time; painting and architecture in space. But dance lives at once both in time and space”.

Anjana is an auditioned artist at Doordarshan and has also staged noteworthy performances for the ICCR and Department of Kannada and Culture. She is currently pursuing her Doctoral studies in the Kathak.

In addition to her Kathak career, Anjana Gupta also holds a Masters in Commerce, yet she finds her true calling in Kathak. She has decided to live this world, to experience all that these fleeting moments on planet Earth offer, through dance. On this journey, she also strives to preserve and foster this art form. She sees this desire being fulfilled in the hands of our future generations. After all - “To dance is to be out of yourself, larger, more beautiful, more powerful”.
